Idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy) changing concepts-1975.
.1 ( HOCM ) , is one of the few common diseases virtually unknown 20 years ago. Since the early case report in 1957’ and the pathologic description in 1958,2 numerous articles have appeared, and yet the disorder ( or more accurately the spectrum of disorders ) continues to be an enigma and a source of controversy. This review will attempt to summarize some of the currently known facts and fanci...
متن کاملSubaortic and midventricular obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with extreme segmental hypertrophy
BACKGROUND Subaortic and midventricular hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a patient with extreme segmental hypertrophy exceeding the usual maximum wall thickness reported in the literature is a rare phenomenon. CASE PRESENTATION A 19-year-old man with recently diagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) was referred for sudden death risk assessment. The patient had mild exertional dyspnea (New Y...
متن کاملThe vanishing subaortic membrane.
A fixed subaortic membrane is a rare cause for left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. This case report describes an unusual echocardiographic presentation of a subaortic membrane in which the membrane, initially not seen, was identified only after a linear shadow posterior to the membrane was seen on a transesophageal echocardiogram. This represents an unusual demonstration of an ultrasoun...
متن کاملMuscular (hypertrophic) subaortic stenosis (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy): the evidence for true obstruction to left ventricular outflow.
The clinical and haemodynamic significance of the subaortic pressure gradient in patients with muscular (hypertrophic) subaortic stenosis (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy) has long been debated. In this report we summarize the evidence which indicates that true obstruction to left ventricular outflow exists in these patients. Rapid left ventricular ejection, through an outflow tract nar...
متن کاملSchwannoma of the conus medullaris.
We report a rare case of schwannoma of the conus medullaris. A 38-year-old female presented with pain and numbness in her lower limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a heterogenous tumour of the conus medullaris. A subtotal resection was performed and histology confirmed schwannoma. The literature regarding these rare tumours, and their cell of origin, is reviewed.
